All units within the Occupational Health and Safety Division work collaboratively with other units and share the principle goal to educate, support and motivate workplaces to comply with the legislation and eliminate workplace injuries and illnesses. The major responsibilities of each OHS unit are outlined below:
Health Services UnitOur Health Services Unit is comprised of the following three areas:
- Hygiene: which provides professional advice and testing in Hygiene, Toxicology, Ergonomics, delivers WHMIS training and monitors compliance, conducts research including review of Airborne Contaminant levels.
- Health Sector: which liaises with the Ministry of Health to develop reasonable standards and programs to promote and support compliance within the health care sector.
- Risk Assessment: which liaises with the WCB to maintain and analyze statistical information to guide OHS in its inspection and research focus.
Mines Safety UnitThe appointment of a chief mines inspector is legislated in the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Oue mines Safety Unit administers the OHS Act and regulations and The Mines Regulations in Saskatchewan mines and uranium mines, included by agreement with the federal government. Partnerships and Strategic Programs UnitOur Partnership and Strategic Programs Unit's primary focus is to build partnerships to promote health and safety and administer educational and committee training programs. Our activities include:
- occupational health committee development and support;
- development of training material (e.g. committee, WHMIS, Supervision, new OHS standards);
- integration of OHS in school curriculum;
- adaptation for Aboriginal audiences;
- development of OHS publications in the form of interpretative guides, hazard alerts, website content and other publications;
- maintaining a health and safety video library; and
- building OHS capacity.
We also serve as principle liaison for partnerships with WorkSafe Saskatchewan, the Farm Safety Council, Industry Safety Associations and NAOSH. Radiation Safety UnitOur Radiation Safety Unit administers the Radiation Health and Safety Act and regulations and its services include testing and technical services, training and presentations, research and radon awareness. Safety Services UnitOur Workplace Safety Unit is are comprised of three specialized service areas:
- Occupational Health Officers who have geographic assignments throughout the province to deliver training, conduct targeted workplace inspections to promote understanding and compliance, respond to concerns on health and safety issues, harassment, work refusals and discriminatory action, investigate fatalities and serious injuries and when warranted develop and initiate prosecution files.
- Agricultural Safety which promotes and enforces OHS compliance in the agricultural sector.
- Legal and Technical Analysis Unit who provide professional technical and interpretive advice on OHS and related legislation, coordinates the appeal process and advises the Director on appeal decisions, coordinates the review of occupational health and safety standards, and manages the harassment unit.
