Minister of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety

An Occupational Health and Safety Representative acts as a liaison between the employer and coworkers, and brings worker concerns to the attention of the employer in small workplaces that have been identified as high-risk, with potential for many more accidents and illnesses that other workplaces. (See the Act, section 16).

The Occupational Health and Safety Representative is responsible for:

  • participating in the control of health and safety hazards in the workplace; and,
  • addressing worker concerns about health and safety in the workplace.
    (See the Act, section 20)

Role of the Employer

The employer must ensure that the occupational health and safety representative has enough time to carry out his/her duties during normal working hours, with no lost of pay or other benefits.

Training of the Representative

Training is crucial to the success of the occupational health and safety representative. It gives the representative the necessary tools for the job. The employer is expected to ensure that the representative is trained in his or her functions and duties. (see Regulation 46). Representative training is available at no charge from our Occupational Health and Safety Division (see OHS Training Courses below) and other agencies approved by the our division to deliver training.
