The Youth at Work programs are an integral component of our ministry’s strategy to increase awareness and understanding of what constitutes a safe, healthy, fair, cooperative, representative and productive workplace. For more information on rights and responsibilities for youth while on the job, and other health and safety issues to help young people transition in the workforce, please visit www.worksafesask.ca/youth.

Our information and resources are targeted to young people to help them successfully transition into working, because they are a very important part of Saskatchewan’s workforce:

  • Approximately one in every six workers is under 25 years of age.
  • Almost 35 per cent of high school students work while attending school full time.
  • One in every two high school graduates enters the workforce instead of, or before, continuing their education or training.
  • Many students continue working while attending university or technical school.
  • Nearly half of all young employees work in the services sector - mostly in sales, accommodations or food services industries.

Young workers are more likely to be:

  • Injured than older or more experienced workers.
  • Injured within the first 3 months of starting a job.
  • Unfairly treated on the job.

Our Ready for Work program resources provide critical information about health, safety and labour standards about the world of work for young workers, educators, employers and parents.

Young people make up a big part of Saskatchewan's workforce.  Unfortunately, young and/or new workers experience higher rates of injuries than other workers.

The Minimum Wage Regulations were amended to establish age 16 as the general minimum age of employment in Saskatchewan.  An ‘absolute’ minimum age of 14 has also been established provided those 14 and 15 year old workers fulfil certain requirements.
